The oxygen sensor, or O2 sensor, is a small but important part of your car’s engine. It measures how much oxygen is in the exhaust and tells the engine computer how to adjust the fuel mixture. A dirty or failing sensor can cause poor fuel efficiency, rough performance, or trigger the check engine light.
In this video, I show you how I cleaned my O2 sensor, explain where it’s located, and share tips on whether cleaning or replacement is the best choice. We also talk about how much a new sensor can cost and a little history—did you know O2 sensors have been used in cars since the 1980s?
Cleaning an O2 sensor can help temporarily, but if it’s damaged, replacement is the only real fix.
